Ele and Chris, The Spa Hotel, Royal Tunbridge Wells, Kent, 20th August 2010
Unusually our day today started the day before when Peter Thompson the Toastmaster telephoned us to check what time we would arrive at the venue. We were in Essex picking up the new band Sprinter van so haven’t got a clue what time we are due at the venue for Ele and Chris’s Wedding. A quick check on the iPhone reveals a really early set up of 10.30. We are very conscious of being at a gig well before we are booked to play it allows a bit of a time buffer in case of traffic problems.
The SPA hotel is situated in the middle of the Spa town of Royal Tunbridge Wells on Mount Ephraim Peter was there to greet us. Staff at the hotel were extremely helpful. They invited us to use the Ashdown Suite as a dressing room which is handy… it allows us to leave personal belongings under lock and key and to rehearse quietly if necessary.
The wedding breakfast took place in the grand hall. With its high ceilings and thick drape curtains it was an excellent room for the band especially as we were set up in the very large bay window.
The dance floor was packed when Peter announced the first and second dances “Don’t wanna miss a thing” Aerosmith and the Jazz standard classic “Moon River” to which Chris lead Ele for a waltz.
Very quickly into the set and we were into up-tempo numbers, a measure of good things to come! Chris and Ele had provided an iPod containing some pretty rocky numbers. The dance floor was still pack when we arrived back for the second set after the superb buffet.
The Hotel music curfew was at midnight so our last set had to start around 11.10 so after a quick break we started the last set at 11.05.
At 12.00 even after the hotel had put on the house lights guests were shouting for more.. what a great night!!
